Educational activities - through a multitude of activities, glma seeks to improve the health and well being of lgbtq patients by educating providers and all health professionals, patients themselves and policymakers at all levels about the specific health needs of lgbtq people. A central component of glma's educational work is the glma annual conference on lgbtq health, the world's largest scientific meeting focusing on lgbtq health. The annual conference annually attracts more than 500 participants from around the u.S. And world. The confernece offers continuing education credit for a broad variety of health professionals in all aspects of lgbtq health. The 2019 glma annual conference on lgbtq health was held in New Orleans, LA, with more than 600 registrants.
Lesbian health fund - glma's lesbian health fund (lhf) makes direct grants to fund lesbian health research and is the world's only research fund solely dedicated to the unique health needs of lesbians and sexual minority women. In 2019, lhf awarded four grants totaling more than $30,000 to support lesbian health research, specifically to study minority stress and reproductive strategies among female same-sex couples; parent-child lgbq socialization, mental health, and substance use among sexual minority women age 15-19; a community-based approach to qualitatively understanding barriers faced by lesbian individuals when accessing care; and reproductive health equity promotion for sexual minority women. Since its founding in 1992, lhf has provided more than $1 million in funding for this important research. Lhf grantees have gone on to secure tens of millions of dollars more in additional funding from a variety of sources for follow-on studies, made possible because of findings from their lhf-funded research.
Policy and advocacy - glma's policy and advocacy efforts seek to influence and establish policies to address lgbtq health concerns at the local, institution and government levels. In 2019, glma worked in coalition to, among other efforts: preserve nondiscrimination protections under the affordable care act for transgender and lesbian, gay and bisexual people; support inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity questions in electornic health records and national population-based surveys; oppose efforts to expand the ability of healthcare providers to refuse case to lgbtq people, women and other communities based on religious objections; promote education and awareness about the human rights and health needs of intersex people; advocate removal of arbitrary exclusions in public and private health insurance for care of transgender individuals; support efforts to ensure health professional students and health professionals receive training and education in lgbtq health; ensure that policies related to HIV are informed by the most up-to-date scientific developments in the care and treatment of people living with HIV; address anti-lgbtq bias and discrimination in the healthcare system, including hospitals and other healthcare settings; and support research initiatives into lgbtq health by the nih and other institutions.
